Google to Kill Chrome Apps In Favour Of The Web

Google Is Killing Chrome Apps In Favour Of The Web
Chrome Apps are going away for good. Google has announced the final timeline for the removal of the Chrome Apps to favor the web.

There’s a good chance this won’t affect you. But just so you know, Google is finally killing off Chrome apps. This comes almost 4 years after Google announced that it was planning to kill Chrome apps in favor of the web.
Although, this won’t happen all of a sudden. Chrome apps will die slowly, starting with platforms like macOS and Windows, and ending with Chrome OS a couple of years later.

Launched in 2013, Chrome apps were web-apps that had the look and feel of a native app you’d launch from your desktop. They were built to offer an experience comparable to a native application.” Being a web-based application built with HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, they transcended the user base of a single OS and were available on most platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS.

But given how the web has progressed, it’s unlikely that Chrome apps will be missed by users. Most applications and services have a similar interface on the web and some even take a step further by offering Progressive Web Apps that deliver an app-like experience right within your browser. Flipkart Lite, Tinder Online, Google Earth and Starbucks are some popular web apps that offer an experience parallel to that of apps.

As mentioned above, Chrome apps won’t be shut down in an instance. According to 9to5 Google, starting in March 2020, Chrome Web Store will no longer accept new applications. However, the existing apps can be updated until June 2022.

In June 2020, Google will end support on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Enterprise and education customers have until the year's end.

Consumer Chrome OS users will lose access in June 2021 with a final shutdown for all Chromebook users coming a year later. Google has promised that it will continue to support in Chrome Extensions on all existing platforms.
